• Background:

  Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a critical member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors, which also includes nerve growth factor (NGF) . Encoded by the BDNF gene, this protein is widely expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, where it plays a pivotal role in neuronal survival, differentiation, synaptic plasticity, and long-term memory formation. BDNF is essential for maintaining the structural and functional integrity of neurons throughout life. It supports neurogenesis and modulates synaptic transmission, making it a key regulator of brain plasticity. Altered BDNF expression has been implicated in a range of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) .
