Complement C5 is cleaved by proteolysis in the terminal phase of complement activation generating the pro-inflammatory C5a and membrane attack complex nucleator C5b. C5a is an inflammatory mediator generated by complement activation that positively regulates various arms of immune defense, including Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling.
