Background
Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is a member of the IL-2 cytokine family. As the name suggests, TSLP was initially discovered as a growth factor derived from the supernatant of a mouse thymic stromal cell line that was found to promote the survival and proliferation of B lymphocytes. It is now known to have wide-ranging impacts on both hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic cell lineages, including dendritic cells, basophils, eosinophils, mast cells, CD4⁺, CD8⁺ and natural killer T cells, B cells and epithelial cells. TSLP expression is linked to many disease states including asthma, inflammatory arthritis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, eosinophilic esophagitis and other allergic states, as well as autoimmune diseases (IBD, rheumatoid arthritis, etc...) and breast and pancreatic cancer.
