EthD-1 is a cell-impermeant, red-fluorescent nucleic acid stain (Ex/Em 528/617 nm) used exclusively for dead cell discrimination in fixed samples or cytotoxicity assays, as it cannot penetrate intact plasma membranes of live cells.
