Streptolydigin inhibits RNA synthesis by binding to RNA polymerase and does not inhibit eukaryotic RNA polymerases. Streptolydigin is a 3-acetyltetramic acid antibiotic and a potent bacterial RNA polymerase inhibitor (Ki: 18 μM and a Kd: 15 μM) .

Streptolydigin is a monocarboxylic acid amide that is a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces lydicus. It has a role as an antimicrobial agent, an EC 2.7.7.6 (RNA polymerase) inhibitor and a bacterial metabolite. It is a spiro-epoxide, a N-glycosyl compound, an organic heterobicyclic compound, a monocarboxylic acid amide, an enol, a bridged compound, a pyrrolidinone and a cyclic ketal.
