- Target Background: CCL4, also known as Macrophage Inflammatory Protein-1beta (MIP-1b) is a small cytokine (~9kDa) that belongs to the CC chemokine family. CCL4 binds to CCR1, CCR2 isoform B, and CCR5. CCL4 is one of the major HIV-suppressive factors produced by CD8+ T-cells; recombinant MIP-1b induces a dose-dependent inhibition of different strains of HIV-1, HIV-2, and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). The processed form of MIP-1b (aa 3-69) retains the abilities to induce down-modulation of surface expression of CCR5 and to inhibit CCR5-mediated entry of HIV-1 into T-cells.
