MFG-E8 Protein plays a crucial role in maintaining intestinal epithelial homeostasis, facilitating mucosal healing, and contributing to VEGF-dependent neovascularization. It acts as a specific ligand, binding to alpha-v/beta-3 and alpha-v/beta-5 receptors, and participates in the phagocytic removal of apoptotic cells. The protein is also implicated in zona pellucida binding and is a major component of aortic medial amyloid.
