Background
Chloroquine diphosphate was originally developed as a treatment against malaria. It has since been implicated in cancer research as it inhibits cell growth and induces cell death in a number of cancer cell lines. Chloroquine also inhibits autophagy by specifically blocking acidification of the lysosomes which fuse with autophagosomes. This consequently prevents the degradation of materials.
