  • Overview:

    Lpha-L-iduronidase, a lysosomal enzyme normally required for the breakdown of certain complex carbohydrates known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) . It is a glycoprotein present in the lysosomes of cells. It is involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans such as dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate. The enzyme acts by hydrolyzating the terminal α-L-iduronate residues of these molecules, degrading them. The mass of the protein is about 83 kilodaltons.
