Description
B-cell-activating factor (BAFF), also known as BlyS and TNFSF13B, is a member of the tumor necrosis factor family of ligands. BAFF is a type II membrane protein and serves as a ligand for TNF receptors TACI (TNFRSF13B), BCMA (TNFRSF17) and BAFF-R (TNFRSF13C) . These receptors are prominent factors in B cell differentiation, homeostasis, selection and survival. Thus, BAFF functions as a potent B cell activator and regulates the proliferation and differentiation of B cells and may contribute to survival of autoantibody-producing B cells. BAFF is expressed in macrophages, monocytes, dendritic cells and T cells. The human BAFF gene codes for a 285 amino acid peptide with a 46 amino acid cytoplasmic domain, a 21 amino acid transmembrane domain and a 21 amino acid transmembrane domain. Recombinant Human Soluble BAFF (Animal Free) consists of 152 amino acid residues, representing the TNF-like portion of the extracellular domain of BAFF and has a molecular weight of 17.0 kDa.
