  Anastrozole is a potent aromatase inhibitor that has been shown to effectively eliminate the conversion of androgens to estrogens in peripheral tissues. It inhibits human placental aromatase in vitro with an IC₅₀ value of 15 nM and at doses 100–200 times its maximally effective aromatase inhibitory dose, does not interfere with the biosynthesis of other steroids, including cholesterol, cortisol, and aldosterone
