Background of the target antigenTumor Necrosis Factor (TNF-a) is a cytokine which is involved in the inflammatory process. It is produced chiefly by activated macrophages (M1), although it can be produced by many other cell types such as CD4+ lymphocytes, NK cells and neurons. TNF-a is involved in the regulation of a wide spectrum of biological processes including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. TNF-A is a trimeric protein encoded within the major histocompatibility complex. It was first identified in its 17 kd secreted form, but further research then showed that a noncleaved 27kd precursor form also existed in transmembrane form.[2]
