  The simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) nef protein (Snef) is expressed at high levels early and throughout infection. This protein is a determinant of pathogenesis and disease progression in adult macaques infected with SIV. _x000B_Iteems to play a role in optimizing the host cell environment for viral replication without causing cell death by apoptosis. Enhances virus infectivity and pathogenicity. Probably involved in viral immune evasion mechanisms _x000B__x000B_In infected CD4+ T-lymphocytes, downregulates cell surface expression of CD4, CD28, CD3, and MHC-I or MHC-II molecules.Interferes with TCR signaling from the cell membrane.
