  • Description
Certolizumab pegol (CZP) is a polyethylene glycol conjugated antigen-binding fragment of a humanized TNF-α monoclonal antibody. This antibody targets and neutralizes soluble and membrane forms of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and inhibits TNF-α mediated signaling in vitro. Unlike other TNF inhibitors, CZP does not contain the Fc region, which results in decreased Fc-mediated effects such as antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC). CZP was developed by UCB Pharmaceuticals and received FDA approval for treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis. CZP is marketed under the trade name Cimzia®

  • Gene
Tumor necrosis factor (TNFa, tumor necrosis factor alpha, TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin) is a cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation and is one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction. It is produced chiefly by activated macrophages, although it can be produced by many other cell types such as CD4+ lymphocytes, NK cells, neutrophils, mast cells, eosinophils, and neurons. TNFb or TNF beta also bin on TNF receptors for Th1 activation.
