Scientific context
In plants the outer light-harvesting antenna of the photosystems (PSI and PSII) is composed of pigment-binding proteins belonging to the Lhc family. Of the 10 main conserved subtypes Lhca1-4 are exclusively associated with PSI while Lhcb3-6 are only found with PSII. Lhcb1 and Lhcb2 are found in the mobile trimers of LHCII associating with both photosystems in variable ratios (state1-state2 transitions). All Lhc polypeptides bind an individual set of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and xanthophyll molecules in a structural and dynamic mutual arrangement which ensures high efficiency of energy transfer processes involved in light-harvesting and photoprotection.
