• Description:

  Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is identified by its ability to support the growth and terminal differentiation of mouse B cells to immunoglobulin secreting cells. IL-5 also exerts pleiotropic activities on various target cells including eosinophils and basophils via receptors of IL-5-specific α and common β-subunit. IL-5’s stimulation of eosinophil has been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic inflammatory diseases, such as asthma. Targeting the interleukin-5 pathway offers benefit to patients with severe asthma. Mepolizumab is an anti-interleukin-5 (IL-5) humanized monoclonal antibody that has been approved as an add-on biological treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma, by both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
