Propidium iodide *10 mM aqueous solution* is a water soluble, having the molecular formula C₂₇H₃₄N₄I₂. It is used for identifying dead cells in a population of cells and as a counterstain in multicolor fluorescent techniques. It can also be used to differentiate necrotic, apoptotic and normal cells.
