DescriptionThe research-grade biosimilar is a humanized single-chain Fv (scFv) antibody fragment that targets vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). VEGF-A is a pro-angiogenic protein that plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of several diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cancer, and diabetic retinopathy. Binding of VEGF-A to its receptor activates several downstream proteins such as PI3K, Ras, and MAPK, and promotes proliferation, growth, and migration of endothelial cells. The antibody binds to VEGF-A and prevents binding to its receptors, thereby inhibiting neovascularization, vascular permeability, and proliferation of endothelial cells. The small size of the antibody not only allows it to retain the ability to bind to its target protein, but also provides efficient penetration into the retina and choroid, and faster clearance from the system. The original antibody received approval from the FDA to treat wet age-related macular degeneration
