Description
Recombinant monoclonal antibody to TNF-α. Manufactured using recombinant technology with variable regions (i.e. specificity) from the hybridoma CDP 571 (Humicade). The antibody binds specifically to TNF-α, a pro-inflammatory cytokine that stimulates the release of other cytokines e.g. IL-1, IL-6, and GM-CSF as well as secretion of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 from endothelial cells. It stimulates acute phase responses and acts as a chemoattractant for NK cells and monocytes/macrophages. The antibody reached Phase II clinical trials with Celltech, UCB

Gene
Tumor necrosis factor (TNFa, tumor necrosis factor alpha, TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin) is a cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation and is one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction. It is produced chiefly by activated macrophages, although it can be produced by many other cell types such as CD4+ lymphocytes, NK cells, neutrophils, mast cells, eosinophils, and neurons. TNFb or TNF beta also bin on TNF receptors for Th1 activation.
